Wild Burros

Speeding along the highway and look what stopped us in our tracks.
They did manage to move slowly across and off the highway and let us pass.

Ok…I’ll admit these pictures are asinine…..(sorry couldn’t resist it)…but Believe It or Not there are wild burros roaming the highways. These “Jacks” (male) and “Jennys” (female) burros were along, and blocking, Nevada Hwy 140 in the Northeast corner of the state. How they’d get there? Well here’s the short version of their history. The Spanish introduced them in the 1500’s. They were a big part of Nevada’s mining history as pack animals in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Some managed to escaped or were turned loose and have roamed Nevada and multiplied over all these years. One other fun fact…Burro is the Spanish word for donkey. Burros and donkeys are one in the same. So the next time you’re cruising the high deserts of Nevada, keep a lookout for those “Jacks” and “Jennys” along or even on the highway you’re traveling. It is a treat to see them and will put a smile on your face when your paths cross along the Highways and Byways you travel. Enjoy the Journey.
